First Announcement: QuarryScapes Third and Final Workshop, Basma Hotel, Aswan, Egypt, 12-15 October 2008
The third and final QuarryScapes workshop being in Aswan (12-15 October 2008) aims to draw together a range of perspectives from specific case studies across the project region, and elsewhere, in terms of setting an agenda for the future research conservation and management of fragile ancient quarry landscapes. Under the theme:
‘A fragile cultural heritage under threat: future directions in the conservation and management of ancient quarry landscapes in the Eastern Mediterranean’
the objective is to create a forum for discussion between QuarryScapes consortium members, invited experts and other interested parties whose expertise cuts across a variety of issues from the documentation of cultural heritage sites, in terms of awareness raising, significance and value, to their management and conservation. Contributions are expected to include the practical implementation of a site management plan of an extensive cultural landscape in terms of World Heritage criteria, to issues surrounding the extent to which local communities can effectively conserve ancient quarries. The workshop also aims to focus on local themes concerning the Aswan region, and Egypt in general, with specific reference to the conservation challenges faced in light of ever increasing urban development and ad hoc damage to archaeological sites by unchecked tourism.
Three field trips will be organised for workshop attendees:
14October - full day visit of the West Bank Aswan ancient quarry landscape where QuarryScapes fieldwork has been undertaken
15 October half-day visit to the ‘Unfinished Obelisk Quarry’ East Bank granite quarries, Aswan
16 October optional full-day field visit will to the Gebel el-Silsila sandstone quarries (between Edfu and Aswan)
Further updates on the workshop and preliminary speaker programme will be announced on this website in due course. For further details please contact Elizabeth Bloxam: e.bloxam@ucl.ac.uk
